Mayor Jaworsky launches council for the day contest

The 2020 council for the day contest is now open to all Grade 5 students in Waterloo.

The question is simple: What's your one idea to make Waterloo an even better place to live? Past winning ideas have included plant a tree day, creating a new science centre in Waterloo, a unique way to dispose of garbage, a campaign to motivate girls to pursue a career in mathematics, and so many more.

Mayor Jaworsky, along with his fellow councillors, will select eight students - one mayor and seven councillors. The students will spend the day with the mayor on Tuesday, April 21, 2020. They will first attend his state of the city address, and afterwards, tour city facilities, conduct media interviews and discuss their winning ideas for Waterloo.

The Grade 5 curriculum is the first time students learn about local government, which makes this a suitable contest for this age group. Students can write a letter, create a video, paint a poster, anything that explains their one idea for making life better in Waterloo.

The contest deadline is Friday, March 13, 2020.
