Nunavut Day 2025

Happy birthday, Nunavut!

Nunavut officially split from the Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999, but celebrations were moved to July 9 to commemorate the passage of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act and the Nunavut Act on July 9, 1993. These pieces of legislation were critical in creating Nunavut as a distinct territory in Canada.

The establishment of the newest and largest territory in Canada has changed the map of our country while deepening national recognition of Inuit culture and knowledge. We extend our respect and greetings to the people of Nunavut and Inuit across Canada on this important day of celebration and reflection.

Happy Nunavut Day!
