Our city. Our water. Our future.

The City of Waterloo is finalizing its efforts to complete a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) Study for the City of Waterloo Stormwater Management Master Plan.

Public participation is an integral part of the Class EA Study as it ensures that the city’s residents and businesses have input and that their ideas, issues and questions are discussed and addressed.

The study area focused on all lands within the City of Waterloo municipal boundaries. The main goal of the study is to provide the city with a preferred stormwater management strategy to identify, protect and enhance natural features, ecological functions and biophysical integrity. The plan will stablish stormwater management policy and guidelines, address stormwater infrastructure, identify and prioritize identified works.

THE PROCESS:
The study follows the Master Planning Approach No 2 in accordance with Environmental Assessment Act as per the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (MEA) document, October 2000, as amended in 2007 and 2011 and will satisfy the requirements of Schedule A, A+ and B projects and will identify future Schedule C projects. The Class EA process includes public/external agency consultation, an evaluation of alternative solutions and alternative design concepts, an assessment of potential impacts associated with the proposed improvements and the development of measures to mitigate identified impacts.

What does this mean for you?
Managing stormwater is critical to reducing the potential for flooding and erosion in our neighbourhoods, protecting our freshwater sources, supporting ecological health and ensuring the vitality of our community. The master plan continues the City of Waterloo’s focus on progressive and adaptive planning and reflects the input of residents, businesses, and community and environmental organizations – integrating new green and grey infrastructure and approaches to ensure a resilient and future-ready city.

In finalizing the master plan, the project team has completed key technical assessments which are summarized in a series of reports. These reports represent distinct pieces of the overall master plan, which have been holistically analysed, evaluated and prioritized on a city-wide basis.

This meeting is to share and discuss with you the selection of the preferred alternative approach to managing stormwater and identified projects. There will be additional public consultation prior to any work actually being undertaken in your neighbourhood.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
Please join us to share your ideas and vision about what we can do at our homes, our workplaces and in our neighbourhoods to reduce runoff and prevent pollutants from entering our waterways.

The project team invites public input and comments and will incorporate them into the planning and design of this project. This third public information centre will present the results of the technical assessments and the preferred alternatives and identified projects.
