State of the City 2025

Mayor McCabe, on behalf of Waterloo City Council, delivered the 2025 State of the City today.

Reflecting on a year marked by change and challenges both locally and globally, Mayor McCabe emphasized the importance of facing challenges with courage, creativity and a strong sense of community. She also took the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge businesses that invested in Waterloo years ago and have since built a long history of success and growth in our city.

Following the theme of growth and development, Mayor McCabe highlighted the upcoming May 5, 2025, Council Meeting where Waterloo City Council will consider the final agreement for more housing along University Avenue East on 33 acres of City-owned lands.

“The new development will have 1,800 new homes, including 100 affordable housing units to support everyone from first-time buyers to seniors and growing families,” said Mayor McCabe. “There will also be a grocery store, plenty of greenspace and links to existing trails and transit systems.”

After the Mayor’s remarks, the eight winners of the Council for a Day contest showcased their winning ideas for improving life in Waterloo.

Thank you to all attendees and sponsors of the 2025 City of Waterloo State of the City. Hosted by Rotary Waterloo, this year’s event raised over $21,000 for Food4Kids Waterloo Region.
