Statement from Mayor Dave Jaworsky on passing of former Mayor Arthur Paleczny
Arthur Paleczny, who served as Mayor of the City of Waterloo during Canada’s Centennial year of 1967, was a community-minded person who greatly influenced the growth and development of the city, said Mayor Dave Jaworsky.
“On behalf of my council colleagues and the residents of the city, I offer my condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Paleczny;” said Mayor Jaworsky. “Mr. Paleczny served on council during an exciting and transformative decade for our city and he led the city to some legacy decisions and projects that still benefit the city today.”
Mr. Paleczny served on Waterloo City Council for eight years beginning in 1960. The city was dealing with housing issues as a result of its growth; it studied the long-term water sources for residents; a new fire station on Weber Street was built; a new band shell was constructed in Waterloo Park; the University of Waterloo had reached its 10 year milestone; the Conestoga Parkway had just opened; and the city’s population had crossed over to more than 30,000 residents.
The city has lowered flags at city hall to half-mast in honour of Mr. Paleczny.
