Temporary road closures and redirections for move-in weekend

The City of Waterloo extends a neighbourly welcome to all new and returning students at Conestoga College, University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University.

Students will be moving in beginning August 30 and through the long weekend. Residents should be aware of road closures and redirections around the university residences and nearby streets. Our goal during this busy time is to ease congestion in the affected areas and we ask residents to please be patient as they travel throughout the city.

Temporary traffic redirection from August 30 at 7 a.m. to Sept 1 at 6 p.m. (see map below)

Bricker Ave

  • No right turns to Albert Street. 

Ezra Avenue

  • No left turns from Ezra Avenue to Albert Street.

Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) Entrance, across from Hazel Street

  • No left turns from University Avenue West to Wilfrid Laurier University entrance.

Lester Street

  • Lester Street will be one-way, northbound traffic only, from Seagram Drive to University Avenue West.
  • No access to Lester Street, south from University Avenue West.
  • No left turns onto University Avenue West from Lester Street.

Sunview Street

  • No left turns from University Avenue West to Sunview Street.

Seagram Drive

  • Road closed, move-in traffic only.

Wilfrid Laurier University Science Building parking lot exit, across from 200 King St N

  • No left No left turns from parking lot exit to King St N.

No parking

  • Lester St from Seagram Drive to University Ave
  • Ezra Ave from Clayfield Ave to King St
  • Bricker Ave from Clayfield Ave to King St
  • Marshall St from Brighton St to Regina St
  • Regina St from Hickory St to University Ave 

City staff continue to work with the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, Conestoga College, Wilfrid Laurier University Student’s Union, Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association, Conestoga Students Incorporation, WLU Graduate Student Association, UW Graduate Student Association, Waterloo Regional Police Services and Region of Waterloo Public Health to welcome students to Waterloo. This collaboration provides opportunities to share information about rental housing support, parking, noise bylaws, property standards and fire safety.

In addition to orientation activities on campus, city staff and partners are excited to connect with students at Waterloo Fest, taking place in Waterloo Public Square on Wednesday, September 4 to introduce students to community resources, social organizations and local businesses.

The City of Waterloo website remains the primary source of information for living here. The New Students in Waterloo guide is a helpful compilation of student support services and community resources. The City of Waterloo will also use social media, particularly Instagram (@CityWaterloo), to welcome students to the community and share about things to do, making social connections, neighbourliness, fire safety, bylaws, active transportation, jobs and volunteer opportunities. The schools, community partners and agencies will ensure that students have the information they need to be safe and responsible.
