Thank you from Mayor Jaworsky to our Waterloo students

To our post-secondary students:

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

This past weekend, Wilfrid Laurier University and University of Waterloo held their annual Homecoming events – which included a return of the Battle of Waterloo football game.

Leaders from across the community asked students to socialize and celebrate responsibly and you did! Thank you for putting safety first, and for showing your respect for our community. Thank you for making us proud and for showing you can celebrate a special event in a way that doesn’t lead to large unsanctioned street parties that strain emergency services resources.

I also want to thank the many emergency services responders who worked and contributed to a positive experience, notably members of Waterloo Regional Police Service, the City’s Municipal Enforcement team, Waterloo Fire Rescue, regional Paramedics, public health officials and staff and school leaders at WLU and UW.

My hope is that this marks a significant change in the way students mark special events and provides a positive example for other communities across the province.

As always, be smart, stay safe, wear a mask and get vaccinated.

Respectfully,

Mayor Dave Jaworsky
City of Waterloo
