There’s lots to celebrate in Waterloo during National AccessAbility Week 2025

City of Waterloo is recognizing National AccessAbility Week (May 26 to June 1) with two local events and advancement of accessibility and inclusion projects.

On May 27, join the Uptown BIA and the City on a tour of local businesses to rate their accessibility for an AccessNow MapMission. A MapMission brings people together to rate places in real-time on the AccessNow app, making it easier for those with all types of disabilities to navigate local spaces. The app uses a color-coded system to rate accessibility: Green = fully accessible, Yellow = partially accessible and Red = not yet accessible.

On May 28, the City of Waterloo and Independent Living Waterloo Region will host an Accessibility Trade show and Conference at RIM Park. This year’s show promises something for everyone. Expect cutting-edge technology, networking opportunities and educational sessions on accessibility and resources. The day will include a tradeshow element, a Sensory Room filled with unique toys and sensory aids, and two panel discussions entitled ‘Interdependence and Breaking Down Social Barriers’ and ‘Creative, Community Connections’.

Throughout the year, the City has continued its commitment to become a municipal leader in accessibility and inclusion. Automated door openers were added at RIM Park, the Eby Farm playground has new accessibility features and sensory backpacks are available at Waterloo recreation centres. The City is building universal washrooms at Albert McCormick Community Centre and completing construction of more at City Hall, which will be available later this summer). The City’s new inclusion services unit has launched; visit the website for information regarding accessibility at the City.

“Accessibility is not just about planning for today, it’s about building a world that meaningfully includes everyone, both now and in the future, ensuring no one is left behind,” said Dorothy McCabe, Mayor of Waterloo. “This work reflects our shared commitment to accessibility, equity, inclusion, and removing the barriers that prevent full participation of people with disabilities.”
