Waterloo celebrates with Stanley Cup champion Steven Lorentz

Stanley Cup Champion and former Waterloo Wolves centre Steven Lorentz of the Florida Panthers is bringing the Stanley Cup to RIM Park (Forbes Room, 2001 University Avenue East) on Thursday, July 25 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Steven Lorentz and the Stanley Cup home to Waterloo. I’m so grateful he’s sharing this experience with our community,” said Mayor Dorothy McCabe. "A hometown hero celebrating his career highlight is an opportunity for our community to applaud his success. It’s also an excellent chance for Steven to inspire young athletes and others with big dreams, showing what talent, hard work and dedication can achieve.”

Members of City of Waterloo minor sport associations (Waterloo Minor Hockey, Waterloo Girls Hockey, Waterloo Ringette, OSHA/Special Hockey and the KW Skating Club) have all been invited to participate, and the event is also open to the public. Fans will have the opportunity to meet Steven Lorentz and take photos of the Stanley Cup.

“The City of Waterloo has a strong commitment to sporting excellence and community service in minor sports,” said Sandra Hanmer, ward 1 councillor and president of Waterloo Girls Hockey Association. “Steven is a shining example of Waterloo community spirit, wanting to share his experience with the young athletes of our city.”

“We’re so excited to welcome back Wolves alumnus Steven Lorentz,” said Hans Roach, ward 3 councillor and past-president of Waterloo Minor Hockey Association. “There’s been a lot of support for him in our community over the years, and he’s always given back. As an OHL player he helped me promote hockey to new Canadians, and it’s no surprise he continues to give by sharing this moment with everyone.”

Lorentz, 28, grew up in Waterloo, attending Laurel Heights Secondary School and playing for the Waterloo Wolves and the Siskins. He was drafted into the OHL by the Peterborough Petes in 2012, and into the NHL by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2015. He joined the Florida Panthers on July 1, 2023.
