Waterloo Fire Rescue responds to house fire
Waterloo Fire Rescue firefighters responded to a house fire on Feb. 10, 2020 on Faraday Court.
At 8:19 a.m. a 9-1-1 call was made reporting heavy dark smoke from a house on Faraday Court. Upon arrival by firefighters they observed a fully involved fire with flames coming out of the second floor window and roof of the home.
Firefighters initially performed a defensive strategy to control the fire and to protect the adjoining homes prior to performing an interior fire attack.
All residents home at the time of the fire were uninjured and there were no firefighter injuries.
The fire was extinguished and due to the severe damage to the home a fire investigation was performed by a lead investigator and an engineer from the Office of the Fire Marshal in partnership with Waterloo Fire Rescue fire investigators. The fire was deemed accidental in nature by the Office of the Fire Marshal investigator and was caused by the fireplace.
Preliminary damage estimates are $850,000, but this may increase as the homeowner’s insurance company assesses the property.
Waterloo Regional Police Service, Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services, Box 690 Firefighter Rehabilitation and Waterloo North Hydro also responded to assist with this fire.
Waterloo Fire Rescue reminds residents that it is the law in Ontario to have working smoke alarms on every level of the home and outside all sleeping areas. In addition, working carbon monoxide (CO) alarms are required adjacent to sleeping areas when there is a fuel-fired heating appliance or attached garage.
We recommend that fireplaces, chimneys and woodstoves be cleaned on an annual basis and be maintained in working order. Cleaning and maintenance should be done by “WETT” certified contractors. For more information please visit the WETT website at https://www.wettinc.ca/faq.cfm.
