Waterloo supports local housing and economy with confirmed water supply allocations

With the recent confirmation of water supply capacity from the Region of Waterloo, the City of Waterloo is moving forward with planned housing growth. The City is confirming water supply allocations for development projects, providing certainty and opportunity to create homes, welcome new residents, support complete, connected neighbourhoods and strengthen our local economy.

The City of Waterloo has continued to advance development applications throughout the past months of regional water supply constraint, and confirmed water supply capacity now allows projects to move through to the building permit stage. Thirteen developments have received water allocation letters from the City, confirming that building permits can be issued once the applicants have satisfied all the details of their development applications. While the City of Waterloo’s new Water Supply Allocation Policy prioritizes water allocation to projects that support affordable housing and sustainability, staff have been able to address all projects that submitted a Water Capacity Application Form by the City’s initial August deadline.

“Council was clear: we will use our water supply allocation to support development projects that have the greatest community benefit, such as affordable housing, and supporting our local economy,” said City of Waterloo Mayor Dorothy McCabe. “With these water allocation confirmations, the path is clear, allowing housing and business development to move forward to meet our city needs. We’re providing certainty that the City of Waterloo can support the growth of our population and economy.”

The developments that received the City’s initial water allocations total approximately 1,250 units, in a mix of affordable housing, additional residential units (ARUs), multi-storey buildings and townhouses. Commercial and industrial spaces also received water allocation.
