Before you apply

You need a licence before you can get married in Ontario. There’s no waiting period between getting your licence and your ceremony.

To qualify for a marriage licence:

  • both people getting married must be at least 16 years old
  • if you’re under 18, you need written consent from both parents – consent forms are available at the Legislative Services counter at City Hall
  • if you were divorced, bring official proof
  • if you are widowed, you do not need proof of your former spouse's death

Your marriage licence is valid for 3 months from the date it’s issued and can be used anywhere in Ontario.

If you were divorced in Canada, bring one original or court-certified copy (no photocopies) of one of these documents:

  • final decree
  • final judgment
  • certificate of divorce

If you were divorced outside of Canada, you’ll need extra documentation before we can issue your licence. Getting approval may take 4 weeks or longer.
