Big ideas wanted: 2025 Council for a Day contest now open

The City of Waterloo invites Grade 5 students in Waterloo to participate in the 2025 Council for a Day contest.

The annual contest is an opportunity for students to share their big ideas to make Waterloo an even better place to live. Eight winners will earn the title of Councillor for a day, attend the 2025 State of the City and spend the day with Mayor McCabe.

The contest, first launched in 2012, offers a practical way for youth to explore local government while emphasizing the importance of civic engagement.

"There’s always so much to learn from the youth in our community,” said Waterloo Mayor McCabe. “Our vision for Waterloo is to be a future-ready community for all, and this initiative highlights the energy and fresh ideas of the young people who will help shape that future.”

The contest is open to Grade 5 students who live or go to school in Waterloo. Enter by creating a 90-second video or two short paragraphs answering the question, “What is your one idea to make Waterloo an even better place to live?” Contest closes April 6, 2025.
