City of Waterloo encourages responsible pet ownership with new perks for dog licensing

New enhancements to the City of Waterloo dog licensing program make it easier for pet owners to keep their dogs safe and protected.

Dog licenses are now valid for a full year from the date of registration, instead of expiring at the end of the year. Residents will still receive a $20 Ren’s Pets voucher after registering, along with access to new benefits such as a 24-hour service that makes lost pet reporting and reunification easier.

The changes are a result of a new partnership with DocuPet, a platform for municipal pet licensing. Additional benefits include:

  • A free dog tag with a unique licence number, making it easier to identify and return lost pets home safely.
  • The option to upgrade or design custom tags, with a portion of proceeds donated to The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth.
  • An easy-to-use online platform for account changes and automatic reminders for renewals.

“A licensed dog is one that can be easily reunited with its family,” says Grant Curlew, Manager, Licensing and Standards. “We are excited for the new perks that residents will receive from this partnership with DocuPet, and hope that it will inspire more people to take this step to protect their pets and all pets in the community.”

All dogs residing in Waterloo are required to be licensed annually and licensing fees directly support local animal control programs and shelter services.
