How to make your street safer

Everyone has a role in making our roads safer. Being aware, sharing the road, and supporting local safety programs all make a difference in your neighbourhood.

Pick up a Slow Down Please lawn sign

Remind drivers to slow down in your neighbourhood. Display a Slow Down Please lawn sign.

Free lawn signs are available at:

This program is a partnership between the City of Waterloo and the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA).

Set up your sign

Follow these steps to assemble and install your sign:

  1. Slide the metal frame into the bottom of the plastic sign bag.
  2. Push the frame into the lawn using your foot, not the top of the sign.
  3. Place the sign where drivers will see it.

Placement rules

The sign is now your property and responsibility.

Follow the city’s Sign Bylaw:

  • put the sign on your own residential property
  • limit one sign per property
  • do not block driveways, sidewalks, intersections or walkways
  • make sure the sign does not block the view of drivers, cyclists or pedestrians
  • install signs from April to October
  • replace damaged signs when needed

Recycle your sign

When you no longer need your sign, recycle the plastic bag and metal frame separately in the Region of Waterloo’s blue box program.

Get involved in your neighbourhood
