Draining your backyard pool or hot tub
Drain your pool or hot tub in a way that protects fish, plants and local waterways.
Drain safely
Water from pools and hot tubs can contain chemicals that can harm aquatic life.
Follow these rules when draining:
- never drain into storm sewers or parks
- let chlorinated water sit for 1 to 2 weeks without adding chemicals, or use dechlorination tablets
- test water before draining — chlorine and bromine levels must be 0.1 mg/L or lower
- drain slowly on your property to avoid runoff
- if you have a small yard, drain in stages over time to prevent flooding and runoff
- you must haul away saltwater — never drain it it into storm sewer or household plumbing
