Keep hydrants clear
If there is a hydrant on your property, keep it:
- visible and accessible at all times
- clear of snow, trees and other vegetation
- with at least 1.2 metres (4 feet) of clear space on all sides
Under the Ontario Fire Code, hydrants must remain clear and unobstructed at all times.
Fire hydrant inspections and maintenance
City-owned fire hydrants are inspected each year to make sure they work during emergencies.
Inspections and maintenance for privately-owned fire hydrants are the responsibility of the property owner.
Report a fire hydrant issue
Report hydrant problems, including damage, leaks, chipped paint or overspray.
For hydrant questions, contact utilities@waterloo.ca.
Request a hydrant flow test
Flow tests measure water pressure and flow from a hydrant.
Developers and contractors can request a flow test to support building or fire system design.
For flow test questions, email utilities@waterloo.ca.
You will need to sign in or create an account before you can request a flow test.
