Request a file search to check if a property has any recorded fire code violations or hazards.

Who can request a search
Anyone can request a file search, but you must have written permission from the current property owner.
How to request a file search
Email fire@waterloo.ca with:
- the property address and any relevant details
- a signed letter from the person making the request
- written authorization from the current property owner allowing Waterloo Fire Rescue to conduct the search and share the results
We can only process fire file search requests, not real estate or legal documents.
A fire prevention officer will contact you if more information is needed.
Review fees
The fee for a file search is $45.56, including tax.
Pay the fee before your request is processed:
- pay by cheque, made payable to the City of Waterloo
- deliver payment in person to Waterloo Fire Rescue Headquarters
After records are released
If a search identifies any fire code violations or hazards, Waterloo Fire Rescue is required to follow up to make sure they are addressed.
