Swim tests

Children must pass a swim test to use the deep end or water slides.

The test requires them to:

  • swim 22 metres across the shallow end without touching the bottom
  • put their face in the water and keep feet at the surface
  • use a consistent front crawl or breaststroke

Swimmers may attempt the test once per swim time. Aquatic staff may ask swimmers of any age to take the test.

Swimming with children or non-swimmers

Direct supervision required

A caregiver (14+) must stay in the pool and within arm’s reach of any child or non-swimmer who has not passed the swim test. They must be able to give immediate assistance at all times.

Children 2 to 6 years old:

  • must stay with a caregiver in the pool at all times
  • even if they pass the swim test, they must remain with their caregiver
  • if they pass the swim test, they can go in the deep end and down the slide
  • one caregiver may supervise up to 2 children in this age group

Children 7 to 10 years old:

  • must check in with a lifeguard to take the swim test
  • if they pass, they may swim alone while a caregiver stays in the facility
  • if they do not pass, the caregiver must provide direct supervision in the pool
  • one caregiver may supervise up to 3 children in this age group

Pool fouling and closures

Pool fouling can force us to close the pool for up to 24 hours.

Help prevent closures:

  • shower with soap and water before entering the pool
  • make sure children use the washroom before swimming and
  • take lots of bathroom breaks
  • check swim diapers often
  • stay out of the pool if you have been sick in the past 48 hours
  • use swim diapers for children not fully toilet trained – we recommend Little Swimmers for children age 3 and under
  • avoid feeding children within one hour of swimming
