Choose your school board support

Every home in Waterloo is linked to a school board, even if no one in the household attends school. Whether you rent or own your home, you can choose which school board you support. This determines which school trustee you vote for.

You can still update your school support designation through the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC). Once your change is confirmed, email the MPAC confirmation to elections@waterloo.ca or bring a copy to Legislative Services at Waterloo City Hall.

Check if you can vote

You can vote if you:

  • are a Canadian citizen
  • are 18 years of age or older
  • live in Waterloo, or own or rent property in Waterloo, or are the spouse of someone who owns or rents property in Waterloo
  • are not prohibited from voting

You can only vote in the ward where you live.

If you are 18 or older, a Canadian citizen, and living in Waterloo for school, you can vote in 2 places:

  • Waterloo – where you live during school
  • your home municipality

Your home is where you usually live when you are not at school (for example, a family home).

Before you vote:

  • check or update your information on the voters' list
  • make sure your Waterloo address is included

Check or update the voters' list

You do not need a permanent address to vote in Waterloo.

Your voting address is the place in Waterloo where you have most often returned to sleep or eat during the 5 weeks before you vote.

This address decides where you vote.

If your ID does not show this address:

  • you can sign a form at the voting location to confirm where you live (this is called a declaration)
  • election staff will help you complete it

You cannot vote if you are:

  • serving a sentence in a correctional institution
  • a corporation
  • voting on behalf of someone else, unless you are an authorized voting proxy under the Municipal Elections Act

If you are on the voters' list, you will receive a voter notification card in September. Your card will include information about when and where to vote.

You do not need your voter notification card to vote, but bringing it with you can help make check-in faster. You can also look up your voting location online.

Remember to bring identification when you vote.

Vote by proxy

If you are unable to vote in person, you can appoint another eligible City of Waterloo voter to vote on your behalf. This is called voting by proxy.

Proxy appointments can be made after August 24, 2026.

If additional nominations are required, proxy appointments can be made after August 27, 2026.

  1. Download the Appointment for Voting Proxy Form (Form 3)
  2. Complete two copies of the form. You must sign each copy with your original signature. Do not sign one copy and photocopy it.
  3. Give both completed copies to the person you are appointing as your proxy.
  4. Your proxy must bring both copies to the City Clerk's office to have the appointment certified before they can vote on your behalf.

The person you appoint must be eligible to vote in the City of Waterloo.

You can appoint another person who is eligible to vote in the City of Waterloo.

A person can act as a proxy for:

  • one person who is not a family member; or
  • more than one family member

For proxy voting, a family member is a spouse, sibling, parent, child, grandparent, or grandchild.

A person who is appointed as a proxy can still vote in their own right.

The person you appoint must bring both completed copies of Form 3 to:

Legislative Services
Waterloo City Centre
100 Regina St. South, 3rd Floor
Waterloo, ON

The office is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No appointment is required.

Your proxy must bring acceptable identification when having the form certified.

Once the appointment has been certified, your proxy will receive a certified copy to take with them when they vote on your behalf.
