  • Waterloo Fire Rescue closes temporary station As the City of Waterloo and province moves into the reopening and recovery phase, the temporary fire station at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex (WMRC) is no longer required.  “We are maintaining enhanced measures at Station One that support required physical distancing, so we no longer need the temporary site at WMRC,” said Chief Richard Hepditch.
  • Waterloo councillors celebrate Pride Month with Rainbow Story Festival Waterloo councillors have partnered with the LGBTQ2S+ community and the Waterloo Public Library (WPL) to launch the Rainbow Story Festival; an online Pride-themed reading circle for local children.  Community members normally gather the first weekend in June to celebrate tri-Pride which includes a day-long festival in Victoria Park.

  • Waterloo City Hall reopening on Monday as part of gradual reopening plan In alignment with Phase 2 of Ontario's Framework for Re-opening the Province and the June 8 provincial announcement permitting the opening of additional City amenities and facilities, the City of Waterloo and other local municipalities will gradually reopen some facilities in the days and weeks ahead. City Hall and the Service Centre will reopen to the public on Monday, June 15 with physical distancing guidelines in place.
  • Many city events moving to online and pop-up format this summer The City of Waterloo is cancelling its in-person arts and culture events this summer, replacing some with online versions, in support of physical distancing guidelines.   In addition, the city’s arts and culture team will be hosting special “pop-up” events, when permitted by public health guidelines.
  • City recommending extension of outdoor patios City staff are recommending that private lands and parking lots and certain municipal lands be permitted to be temporarily used for commercial purposes, including patios and patio expansions by local bars and restaurants.  The city has launched the S∙O∙L∙E∙R (Support Our Local Economic Recovery) Initiative, which is designed to assist local businesses and artisans, such as restaurants and bars, rebound from the impacts of the pandemic.

  • City of Waterloo joins Digital Main Street’s ShopHERE powered by Google to support local businesses The program offers local businesses and artists the opportunity to start selling online   To help support our local small businesses, today the City of Waterloo and the Waterloo Small Business Centre, along with neighbouring municipalities in Waterloo Region, are joining the ShopHERE powered by Google program, with a goal of getting local businesses online this year.  ShopHERE powered by Google, which started in the City of Toronto, helps independent businesses and artists build a digital presence and minimize the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • City of Waterloo launches interactive map featuring local retailers The City of Waterloo is pleased to release an interactive GIS-based map featuring local retailers as they re-open and how they’re operating. In April, the City of Waterloo launched a Google map highlighting restaurants that are offering curbside pickup or delivery services during COVID-19.
