  • Waterloo Fire Rescue urges residents to keep fire safety top of mind Since January 1, 2020, fire fatalities across Ontario have increased by 65 per cent compared to the same time last year, with 17 Ontarians dying in fires in March alone. Waterloo Fire Rescue reminds everyone to keep fire safety top of mind.
  • City of Waterloo reopens community gardens Following the Province of Ontario’s decision to reopen community gardens as essential service, the City of Waterloo has reopened all 73 plots in five community gardens on city-owned land. The city, along with area municipalities, has taken a coordinated approach to reopening community gardens, working together with the Community Garden Council and in consultation with the Waterloo Region Public Health Office to ensure a safe transition back to operating these valued spaces.
  • Safety reminders: don’t hold garage sales, observe physical distancing when out in parks and trails With warm temperatures expected this weekend, the city has two important safety reminders -  don’t stage garage sales and and follow new trail markers when out for physical activity. The trail markers have been placed on asphalt trails, along with signage throughout parks and trails to remind people of the need to remain at least six feet apart from people who do not live in the same household.
  • Residents advised to limit fireworks celebrations this Victoria Day (1) The City of Waterloo, along with area municipalities across the region, remind residents to keep safety top of mind this Victoria Day. To meet physical distancing guidelines, public firework displays will not be permitted and public events have been cancelled across the region for the May long weekend (May 16-18).

  • Area municipalities extend closure of municipal administrative and operations facilities Waterloo Region – As another step in their coordinated emergency response to the global pandemic, today, the Region of Waterloo and all area municipalities extended the public closure of municipal administrative and operations facilities until at least May 31. Today’s decision aligns the municipalities with Sunday’s announcement from the provincial government delaying the re-opening of the province’s schools until May 31.
  • City’s Canada Day celebration moving to virtual format Due to the current pandemic, the City of Waterloo will not be staging an in-person Canada Day event this year, instead it will be moving its celebration online.  “It’s widely understood that when restrictions are eventually lifted, it will be a slow and gradual process.

  • Waterloo releases interactive map showcasing restaurants open during pandemic The City of Waterloo has produced a categorized custom Google map of restaurants and food businesses open across the city that offer pick up, curbside or delivery services during the pandemic.  “With businesses facing reduced operations as a result of physical distancing measures, the support of the local community is needed now more than ever,” says Justin McFadden, director, economic development for the City of Waterloo.
  • Waterloo At Home As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to change the way we live, the City of Waterloo is pleased to launch Waterloo At Home, an online curation of helpful tips and resources for residents to make the best of their time at home.  City staff from arts and culture, senior services, active living, neighbourhoods, fire services, bylaw and the City of Waterloo Museum, along with community partners like the Waterloo Public Library have come together to provide as much virtual content as possible for the community.
