  • City of Waterloo moving forward with essential public works construction projects The City of Waterloo is moving forward on several necessary construction projects that will deliver valuable benefit to the community.  The Province of Ontario supports the construction of roads, watermains, sewers and other municipal services that are deemed essential to ensure that these services continue to work properly and continue to meet our community’s needs.
  • City of Waterloo extends municipal program and facility cancellations to June 30, 2020 The City of Waterloo, in collaboration with local municipalities, have agreed to cancel all spring indoor and outdoor municipal recreation programs throughout the region up to and including June 30, 2020.  In addition to these program cancellations, all municipal cultural, recreational and leisure facilities in local municipalities including City of Waterloo Museum, Waterloo Public Library, recreation facilities, community centres, arenas, pools and sports fields will remain closed through to June 30, 2020.
  • Waterloo postpones city-affiliated events until June 30 The City of Waterloo, in collaboration with other local municipalities and organizers of large events on municipal property, have agreed to reschedule, delay or cancel events up to June 30, 2020. Although provincial or regional public health does not currently require such postponements or cancellations, these changes allow for the potential extension of the physical-distancing requirements currently in place.

  • Waterloo Fire Rescue establishes temporary station As part of its business continuity plan, Waterloo Fire Rescue has established a temporary fire station at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex (WMRC).  “This move supports the medical officer of health’s directive to observe physical distancing and is beneficial for the health and safety of our firefighters,” said Chief Richard Hepditch.
  • Area municipalities extend closure of facilities, cancelation of programs and events As another step in their coordinated emergency response to the global pandemic, today, the Region of Waterloo and all area municipalities extended the public closure of municipal facilities until at least May 4. Today’s decision aligns the municipalities with yesterday’s announcement from the provincial government delaying the re-opening of the province’s school until May 4 to protect the health and safety of students and staff.
  • Business and economic support team forms to help businesses navigate COVID-19 The Region of Waterloo, all seven area municipalities, Waterloo EDC (Waterloo Region Economic Development Corporation) and local partners have created the Business and Economic Support Team of Waterloo Region (BESTWR) to help all types of local businesses cope with challenges caused by COVID-19.  “Collectively, this group will be a point of contact for governments as they make rapid decisions to support the evolving economic and business environment, and will help to promptly disseminate these decisions to our business community.
  • City of Waterloo unveils financial relief measures to assist residents and businesses City of Waterloo Council has approved a COVID-19 Economic Relief Plan valued at approximately $750,000 to assist residents and businesses dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The City’s financial package aligns with financial assistance previously announced by the federal and provincial governments and is designed to help people deal with financial challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
