Nunavut officially split from the Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999, but celebrations were moved to July 9 to commemorate the passage of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act and the Nunavut Act on July 9, 1993. These pieces of legislation were critical in creating Nunavut as a distinct territory in Canada.
